Big Brothers Big Sisters of Humboldt wants to remind people to give back after the consumer frenzy of Black Friday.

"Everybody has a busy lifestyle and they get caught up in the fever of the season and I guess sometimes you forget about others. There's other ways to give back to the economy," development coordinator Jodie Hergott said on Tuesday, which marks this year's Giving Tuesday celebration.

Giving Tuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering and a time when charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for their favourite causes, she said.

"It harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world, just to bring change into their community. It provides a platform for all of them to encourage the donation of time, resources, talents, basically to volunteer in some way, shape or form."

Donations of time and money to Big Brothers Big Sisters, for example, help them keep the doors open and provide services to children in need in the community, she said.

More than 5,700 partners came together for the 4th annual Giving Tuesday in Canada in 2016, according to the Giving Tuesday organization. Canadian online giving has increased by 353 per cent since 2012 as measured by CanadaHelps, the group says.
