The Water Security Agency and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health have advised the public to be cautious around areas that could have blue-green algae.

Blue-green algae bloom commonly occur during calm, hot weather on lakes, and reservoirs with shallow or slow-moving water which would have lots of nutrients.

Farmers with livestock that could be around these types of water are also advised to keep the animals away from such water.

The blooms give off a shimmering, pea soup appearance. They can be blue-green, bright blue. or grey-tan in colour.

These blooms typically can last up to three weeks and can be pushed around on the water by the wind.

Swimming, and drinking this water can cause adverse health effects:

  • red skin
  • sore throat
  • cramps
  • diarrhea

Also, caution should be utilized when consuming fish or shellfish that have been caught in these areas, particularly the organs of the fish should not be eaten.

The Ministry of Health asks if you have symptoms please call Healthline at 811 or see your health care provider.
