Prior to the beginning of another season on the ice, the business and financial side of the Humboldt Broncos was addressed on Monday.

The club's annual general meeting took place at Jubilee Hall.

President Jamie Brockman addressed those in attendance at the start of the meeting, announcing that he will be leaving the board after five years.

After the meeting, he said that it has been enjoyable getting to know the ins and outs of operating a hockey team.

"There is way more positive than there is negative. I will cherish all the times that we have overcome certain adversities," explained Brockman. "It's a rewarding experience to be part of the community and put some hard work into keeping the Humboldt Broncos alive."

Broncos outgoing President Jamie Brockman delivered the financial outlook of the organization.

Brockman announced that fellow board member Robyn Moore will also be stepping down. There is positive news for the board, as three people accepted nominations to join for the coming year.

Jay Fitzsimmons, Rob Eichorst, and Kathleen Keen will occupy roles in the board, joining current members Randy MacLean, Kevin Garinger, Darrin Duell, Dalyn Graf and Colby Jasken.

Following Brockman's address came the financial statements, which showed a loss of $51,266 for the 2016-2017 season.

Brockman highlighted lower season ticket sales, a dip in the spring lotto and less money from the Seed for Green, Harvest for Gold fundraiser as some reasons behind the loss.

Season ticket sales have slowed even more ahead of the new season, with the club reporting an estimated $40,000 less in sales than last season.

Brockman says that they will reach out to the public and past season ticket holders to search for potential answers.

"I honestly don't know the reason. I know Darcy will be working hard here. Some of the staff are going to be phoning past season ticket holders that haven't renewed yet and maybe we can get some of that why and maybe they just haven't got to it yet."

The Broncos say they need to sell around 150 more season tickets to match last year's numbers. Another push for sales will come before the season, along with a 'Party in the Park' event on the weekend of the club's home opener.

On the plus side of ticket sales, there was an increase of $6,000 in gate admission to go along with revenue collected during the team's two home playoff games.

Moving forward, Brockman noted that he hopes that more people continue to support the team, as it is critical to their success both on and off the ice.

"A community owned team takes community people to run it. It won't operate without. Next, comes the people who come to the games and buy tickets, souvenirs, the 50/50's and season tickets," he said. "Then comes the corporate sponsorships, which is so critical. It takes money to operate a team and that is crucial for any junior hockey team."

Brockman says that any help is appreciated, and they are always looking for volunteers to chip in as well.

"I just want to reach out to those people and if they can offer any help to keep the Broncos strong and survive in Humboldt and area, please give us a call. It's huge."

During the meeting, Brockman announced that the organization picked up a third-year option for Head Coach and General Manager Darcy Haugan.

Haugan also received a new two-year extension on top of that, which will keep him behind the bench through the 2019-2020 season.

The Broncos open training camp on August 31, with their season and home opening game coming September 16 against Notre Dame.
