A Bruno councillor is looking into the idea of installing an archery range in the town's former curling rink.

“Once our curling club kind of died off and we weren’t using the building for anything, we were looking at affordable ways to repurpose the building for use that would fit the town well,” Daryl Lepage said.

“We have an active wildlife group and we don’t have an archery range and there were a couple communities in the area that have already converted their curling rinks into archery ranges, and that’s where the idea was born.”

Lepage is taking the lead in investigating grants and regulations needed to set up an archery range, and has pictures of the repurposed curling rink in Viscount - but the project is in its infancy and will depend on money available in this year’s budget, he said.

Kevin Pulvermacher, president of the Bruno WIldlife Federation, said an archery range would be a good use for the building but background surveys are needed to gauge interest.

“Is it a case of ‘build it and they will come’ or is it a case of ‘build it and it’ll be underutilized?’”
