Teachers and staff in Bruno are quite impressed with how their first year of being a "Leader in Me" school is progressing.

The program, which highlights thought processes such as being proactive, always have an end goal in mind, seek to understand then be understood and synergizing was brought into the school in 2015.

Principal Lianne Borstmayer explains how they implemented the program into their school.

"All of our staff was trained in the seven habits of highly effective people, a few of us went to the leadership assembly in Calgary and we also went to one in Edmonton. We started to get some ideas, brought them back, our staff decided, we have a good school. Our kids are good but we want them to be great, how can we do that?"

"We're starting to live by those values and all those ways of life," Borstmayer continued. "We want them to be responsible, hard working, we want them to have integrity and those are things this program teaches. It's a lot of character building, it's been a real interesting journey to see the kids grow and learn and become better leaders."

They showcased what they learned in the first year on Friday with a guest speaker, Indian Ernie Loutit who spoke on leadership traits, they also conducted a community wide clean up as well as a leadership assembly. They also planted some trees including their grade 12 strudents helpin gthe kindergarten class plant their own tree in the school yard.

Borstmayer explains what they hope to see in the future.

"They have a three year process, the first year is changing the climate of your school, next year we're going to start aligning the academics to our climate and after that we wrap it all together and by then it should be a well oiled machine. We're on year one and we're excited for year two."

Local parents have helped keep the "Leader in Me" program running by raising $35,000 this year to help them implement and sustain it.

They also had 35 grade seven students from Humboldt Public School join them Friday, as did 31 students from Imperial School.
