With Canada's Road Safety Week wrapping up, strapping up is the final message.

Canada Road Safety Week is a project coordinated by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee. It's a 7-day national campaign aimed at making Canada's roads the safest in the world. The message for May 20th, the final day, is on seatbelt use.

Throughout the week, the daily focus has included drug-impaired driving, alcohol-impaired driving, fatigued driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and finally, seat-belt use.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study estimated you're 17 times more likely to be ejected in a collision if you’re not wearing a seatbelt, and you’re more than twice as likely to die if ejected.

"It's one of those things that just makes us shake our head. What is it going to take to make it click for people? I think most people are aware that wearing your seatbelt is the top thing you can do to increase your safety on the roads," said Tyler McMurchy, Manager of media relations with SGI.

Along with the added dangers of not wearing a seatbelt, the act can result in a $175 ticket and also costs the recipient three points under the Safe Driver Recognition program.

"That's a costly reminder if you're not wearing a seat belt, but not as costly as the potential consequences that could result from not wearing a seat belt."

SGI held a Traffic Safety Spotlight in February designated towards seatbelts and child seats. 409 drivers in Saskatchewan received tickets as part of the spotlight, proving there can never be enough focus when it comes to buckling up.
