It's that time of year again the pesky mosquitoes are starting to come out of hibernation. Which means currently the mosquitoes we see are last years waking up due to the warmer weather.

Phil Curry with Sask. Health says, "they spend the Winter kind of hibernating in root cellars, caves, rodent burrows, and old buildings."

These mosquitoes are not the typical ones that would be carrying West Nile, those are the ones that appear in late June.

Curry does note, "they are out as well but in very low numbers, and we don't find many of them at this time of the year."

To help lower the population Curry says to empty standing water, "eliminate a lot of the habitat, particularly around your property, then you won't have any mosquito eggs hatching out in there. It's shaping up to be a bit of a dry year so we may not have too many of the spring mosquitoes; however that could change if we get a lot of thundershowers."

If your going to be spending a lot of time outdoors and the familiar buzz is around Curry recommends to wear long sleeved clothing and use repellent to keep the bugs away.
