The last long weekend of summer is here as Labour Day weekend hits.

This also means increased traffic on our Saskatchewan highways

Christine Niemczyk with CAA describes some important things for motorists to keep in mind.

"I think what drivers need to remember from a CAA perspective is that your vehicle becomes your home away from home when you're on road trips. You're going to want to make sure everything is in top working condition. If you're not sure, take it to a CAA car care centre, an AARS, or a mechanic of your choosing, just to have a look."

Niemczyk says the Long weekend usually means busy highways and possible car trouble.

"If I could speak on behalf of our tow truck operators with road side assistance, please remember to slow to 60 kilometers on our highways when passing tow truck operators assisting other motorists. That is law in Saskatchewan, and that also applies to law enforcement and emergency personnel."

Niemczyk says many motorists generally do not know about the Slow To 60 rule when passing emergency vehicles

In 2006, the Saskatchewan government made it law that vehicles are required to slow to 60 kilometers an hour when passing tow trucks on the side of the highway.

According to SGI - - There is an average each year of around 60 vehicle crashes involving an emergency vehicles.

Niemczyk explains why people should slow down.

"What if there's a family inside that vehicle who are waiting patiently for someone to come and offer their assistance? A number of personnel are on that highway, a number of human beings waiting for help, so let's keep that in mind. Very important to slow to 60."

They also remind you to slow to 60 in any orange zone, that's also the law.

Niemczyk adds it is imperative that driver stay focused while travelling

This means no cellphone use, staying alert while driving and appointing a passenger to navigate and assist in directions.
