The Saskatchewan chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society helped host an event in Humboldt Saturday to help promote people to eat healthier.

Two chefs from the Bella Vista Inn, Alexander Wilson and Nickolle Thoms demonstrated making a meal tasty with the help of herbs and spices instead of salt.

Cancer Control Coordinator Diana Ng explains more about the event.

"It's all about eating healthy with more flavour and trying to encourage people to use herbs and spices rather than using a lot of salt. Research is showing that a high use of salt is linked with the development of stomach cancer as well as some other diseases so we're here today to promote healthy living, healthy eating, exercising."

The chefs put together a three course meal with the appetizer being goat cheese and spinach won-tons with a sauce, the main course consisted of steel head trout and the dessert was comprised of a Saskatoon berry parfait.

Thoms was excited with the way the event went.

"I felt a warm welcome today, little nervous," she said after the event. "I might do it because now I have the experience after today and in the future I plan to do other things with this in my career."

The event also had a stretch break with local yoga instructor Kim Hergott.

Ng says they were happy to add Humboldt to their schedule this year.

"We haven't been in Humboldt before, we kick started them last year. We went to eight different communities and we heard great feedback and we heard some community feedback from Humboldt and they wanted it here so here we are. This year we have organized 12 events through out the province so we've expanded."

Studies show that eating healthier and being active can help reduce about one third of all cancers.
