Canadian champion and world bronze medalist Pat Simmons was in Muenster on Tuesday, instructing on the game of curling.

Simmons, who is from Moose Jaw, teamed up with Affinity Credit Union and CurlSask to bring the clinic to the community.

He says that with the two sheet facility in Muenster, it was an opportunity to bring more fine-tuned instruction.

"An individualized look at some people and help them with some tips here and there about different aspects of the game, delivery, sweeping, and what not."

With the Olympics, and most recently the Brier in Regina fresh in the minds of curling fans and newcomers, Simmons says that the game is at an all-time high in popularity.

He feels that it's important to capitalize on that and get out to communities to keep people involved.

"Anytime we can give back, and if doing this gets more people involved, it's well worth it," he said. "Those people may spread the word to another and you get another team or two or three and it starts to snowball."

Simmons says that with many small town rinks having closed, the facility in Muenster is a great one for the community.

In continuing to promote the game, Simmons says he would like to see more teams get out and about in their communities like Kirk and Dallan Muyres and Steve Laycock's team.

"The more of this kind of stuff we can do, the better. I'd like to see teams follow Team Laycock and what the Muyres' boys have done in going out to communities and building the game."

Laycock's team has been touring the province with their Community Rocks program since the 2012-13 season, and have expanded to visit five clubs each year.

In December they visited the LeRoy Curling Club and came to Humboldt in February 2017.

Simmons says that they will be continuing on with their 'Curling in Your Community' tour with a stop in Watrous on March 19.
