Come January 4, 2016 rules regarding the ownership of Saskatchewan farmland will change.

Lyle Stewart, Saskatchewan's Agriculture Minister made the announcement after residents of Saskatchewan were consulted and the results showed the people of Saskatchewan wanted change.

The changes clarify who can and cannot own farmland in the province.

Under the amendments, pension plans, administrators of pension fund assets and larger trusts are ineligible to buy farmland.

Non-Canadian citizens can still own up to 10 acres, and exemptions can still be granted for economic development initiatives.

The Ministry of Agriculture took their opinion poll between May 20 and August 10 of 2015. They had over 3,200 residents take part.
