A 17-year-old boy has been charged with four counts of first degree murder, seven counts of attempted murder and one count for unauthorized possession of a firearm following a mass shooting in the community of La Loche Friday.

Saskatchewan RCMP Superintendent Grant St. Germaine announced the charges at a press conference Saturday afternoon.

Nine people were shot in the incident which left four dead and seven transported to hospital with injuries.

Adam Wood, a 35-year-old teacher as well as Marie Janvier, a 23-year-old teacher assistant and tutor were shot when the gunman opened fire inside the school. Wood was transported to hospital where he died, while Janvier was found dead inside the school.

An estimated 150 students and staff were in the building at the time of the shooting.

Dayne Fontaine, age 17, as well as his 13-year-old brother Drayden were both shot dead at their residence prior to the school shooting.

"From my understanding going through some of the information I read this morning, there has never been a school shooting of this magnitude in the country," noted St. Germaine. "It will have a huge impact for sure, a huge impact for the community of La Loche."

The suspect will make his first court appearance on Monday at 9:30am in Meadow Lake Provincial Court.

The news hit home for recently elected MP Georgina Jolibois, who served four terms as Mayor of La Loche prior to entering federal politics.

"It is a horrific incident. My nieces and nephews were inside the school as the incident occurred, so certainly to hear the news, it was heart-breaking. It was a difficult time," she stated.

Support services have been set-up within the community to assist with those in need of immediate care.
