With the May long weekend arriving, Saskatchewan Government Insurance and local police forces are ramping up their search for impaired drivers.

Check stops will be running throughout the long weekend in an effort to catch anyone who elects to drive after drinking.

"People might be out celebrating, so there is definitely potential there for impaired driving. Especially if people aren't aware that you shouldn't get behind the wheel of a car," said SGI's Tyler McMurchy.

It's not just the drinking and driving that is concerning on the roadways according to McMurchy.

"We're really reminding people that as they head onto the roads they need to take care out there, that they're driving sober, buckle up of course, and put down the phone."

Last year, there were 255 collisions in Saskatchewan on May long, resulting in 82 injuries and two deaths.

McMurchy added that naturally, the highways will be busier as well with the long weekend, so keeping an extra eye out is always important.
