City Council meets biweekly on Monday evenings at 5:30 pm and it is open to the public. Here is what happened at City Council last night according to the council briefing:

Public Acknowledgment:

• Mayor Muench congratulated the curlers and thanked the staff, volunteers, and curling club members for a “bang-up” job at the Viterra Scotties Women's Provincial Tournament of Hearts which was held January 22 to 27th.
• Mayor Muench acknowledged and congratulated “Direct Drive Taxi” on starting their new business venture in Humboldt. The new taxi service has been well received and will fill a void.

Reports and Information:

• Council approved an extension to February 14, 2020 on a Discretionary Use Application. In February of 2018, City Council approved a discretionary use permit for Cannadabis Medical Inc. to construct and operate a medical marijuana grow operation at 1720 3rd Avenue. However, the required building and development permits for the proposed construction on the property has not yet been submitted. Under The Planning and Development Act, 2007, discretionary use approvals are only valid for twelve months, and only one extension is permitted. If the extension lapses in 2020, the process will have to start from the beginning with a new Discretionary Use Application.
• Council approved a recommendation from the Public Works Department to sole source the installation of the pump replacements in lift station 4 and 5 and will have TSL Mechanical of Lanigan complete the installation. The City's purchasing policy requires that for purchases exceeding $20,000 the City publicly tender the work, however, sole sourcing can be exercised in a number of situations where with Council approval it is deemed to be in the best interest of the City to do so.
• Council will be considering a discretionary use application at its next Regular Meeting to be held February 11, 2019. The application is being made on behalf of the Harvest International Christian Church of Canada to construct and operate a Place of Worship at 709 – 2nd Street. Property owners within 75 meters of this location will be advised of the application and invited to attend the Public Hearing on February 11th if they have any concerns.

 New Business:

• The City of Humboldt received two letters addressing concerns relating to transportation services. These letters were received shortly after the announcement of the retirement of the local cab company, and prior to the new local taxi service starting operation.
• Council approved appointments to existing Boards and Committees for 2019. Committee member appointments to the newly formed Humboldt Bronco Memorial Committee were also made. Appointments to the Humboldt Marketing Committee has been postponed and will be reviewed at the next Regular Meeting of Council on February 11th, 2019.

Next City Council meeting will be February 11th at 5:30 pm above City Hall.
