If you live in the City of Humboldt, you will soon find a letter in your mailbox from the city, which will go over your tax and property assessment.

This year is a reassessment year for the city, which occurs every four years.

Finance Director Joe Day says that changes vary based on your property.

"With respect to the overall taxes that the city is increasing, there isn't a big bottom line for the taxes we collect. There is only about a four percent increase," he noted. "Because of the reassessment, there will be wide swings from that number on a property by property basis."

Day briefed council on the latest numbers at their most recent meeting on Monday, June 12.

He says that the general increase of 4% is down from the originally discussed 6.5% increase.

"We focus mostly on our municipal general revenue side when we were talking to council," he explained. "There is some relief to property owners because we are decreasing the amount we require for the hospital repayment. The school tax portion of the bill is helping a little bit as well."

Day adds that notices and assessments will be received by the end of the month.

"When people do get their assessment in the mail, we ask that they look closely at what the change has been year over year," he said. "That will have the biggest impact of their taxes year over year."

Property tax payments are due by July 31, says the city, though they add that the deadline does not apply to those who are on the Tax Instalment Payment Plan Service.

This year, the city will collect just over $6.7-million in municipal property taxes.
