City of Humboldt administration is asking city council at Monday's meeting for approval to clean up the ditch on the north side of the Humboldt Golf Club.

Development on the north end of the city has led to more water from 14th Avenue and 16th Avenue draining through the ditch, Public Works director Peter Bergquist told Bolt FM.

Deadwood and sediment has accumulated in the bush just west of the #1 tee, which causes incoming water to drain more slowly, he said. Runoff then cuts through the golf course.

“Like any kind of drainage ditch that goes through the city or takes our water away, it has to have maintenance periodically just to make sure the flows aren’t hindered too much.”

The land is owned by the city but is on a long term lease to the club. The recommendation must go through council because it’s not typical for the city to do work outside its own properties, Bergquist said.

The work would require three days use of the city’s excavator and several staff. That cost would be absorbed within the stormwater budget operating costs.
