The existing clock was installed in the 1980s and it's getting more difficult to find parts and keep it operational, Day said. Humboldt City Council on Monday approved spending around $80,000 for the installation and purchase of spare parts for a new LED score clock at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

The money will come from the city’s reserves, which Coun. Roger Nordick opposed.

“While I’m not opposed to the actual purchase of the clock - and I’m not - I’m opposed to using reserve money to replace an old clock that’s still working with a new clock just because we don't want to wait until next year’s budget.”

Mayor Rob Muench said the money is needed now to ensure the clock is ready for the 2018-19 season.

“I think that’s just what the Broncos had asked for and I think it’s going to have to be spent at some point, so we might as well have the option of selling advertising for this coming season.”

Council has the option of replacing the reserve money in next year’s budget, he said.

The project is billed as a way to improve communications, increase sponsorship revenue and improve the user experience of the EPA.

The City and the team have agreed in principle that advertising revenue relating to Broncos activities will stay with the team, while all other advertising revenue will go to the City.

City manager Joe Day said the Broncos will pay for the clock itself, which likely costs between $150,000 to $200,000.

Day previously told Bolt FM the existing clock was installed in the 1980s and it's getting more difficult to find parts and keep it operational.
