A local business owner had some scathing words for Humboldt city council on Monday regarding the effectiveness of operating an organization here.

Doug Biehn, the owner of Viking Wealth Management is constructing a new building with the hopes of getting a five year tax abatement.

Mayor Rob Muench says they have some points to keep in mind when they discuss the possibility of the abatement.

"I think we, as a city if we do consider something we would like to see it based on job creation and maybe development that will increase the tax breaks in the long run."

The city does have tax breaks in place for business development but that only works for the down town core, Biehn plans to build on the east end of Glenn Hall Drive.

Muench says they are looking into the request as well as their entire business plan.

"We would not just look at this one individual case but we would look at a policy that would be in place for all businesses whether they are new businesses coming to the city or existing businesses looking to expand."

As council ponders their decision Mayor Rob Muench says meeting with business owners and the public and hearing concerns is key for them.

"Get out into the community, this is something we talked about earlier in our strategic planning. We're going to be looking at getting out either visiting with the community or the business community on a regular basis that we can sit down informally over a cup of coffee with a group and discuss the issues that are out there."

Council will provide Biehn with a decision closer to spring.
