In the next half decade, the intersection of Main Street and Fifth Avenue in Humboldt could very well be straight with traffic lights.

The often confusing corner is one of the busiest in the city with both vehicles and pedestrians.

Planning & Engineering Director Peter Bergquist says they need some assistance from CN along the way.

"We would likely have to purchase the land first. It would probably be in a five-year horizon to do this type of working, of course, pending council approval, pending acquisition of land, and if it's a high enough priority or not."

A traffic report conducted by the city found 5th Avenue should be a truck route that can keep larger vehicles off Glenn Hall Drive as well as make right turns a possibility for north bound semis entering on Highway 20.

5th Avenue is currently a heavy truck route as well as portions of 4th Avenue however due to the off-set intersections, 5th Avenue is not as conducive to East/West heavy truck traffic through Humboldt. Once the realignment occurs the city anticipates heavy trucks will use this route more often for local deliveries and as well an alternative route when construction work or other closures occur on Highway 5.

Bergquist says aligning the intersection and opening up a turning lane on the south east corner will help every thing flow better.

"We have found times, even when we have to close down Highway 5 for construction work, we don't have a lot of alternatives, so this would act as a good alternative for trucks to keep on moving through our community."

Council approved last night that a tender will be offered for work on 5th Avenue that would at least allow more traffic through at Main Street including northbound trucks being able to make right hand turns, the downfall for some is that no parking will be allowed on the south side, that being a safety issue.
