As part of the Horizon School Division's 'Student Day' Dr. Alec Couros spoke regarding digital citizenship.

The Humboldt Collegiate Institute graduate, is now the Associate Professor of Information and Communication Technologies at the University of Regina.

He spoke to students during the day Tuesday plus gave a presentation to the public during the evening.

He says parents need to be involved themselves to know exactly what your kids are doing online.

"They have to know how their lives have changed compared to their own, what apps they are using. Some of the very basics, Snapchat and Facebook get on these tools if you are not on them already and start to build relationships through the apps as well."

He admits as dangerous as social media sites can be the original fears have tapered somewhat over the years.

"The early scares of cyber-predators from the 1990's have really when it comes down to numbers predators are more likely to be more local or family, someone that has access to the child rather than these people who are looking for your children."

Cutting down screen time and using proper security measures such as privacy settings are huge when it comes to sites like Facebook. He stressed staying away from odd or "fake" friend requests. He says if you don't know the person or have no mutual friends simply hit decline.

He doesn't imply it's easy to keep everything safe online in today's world.

"It used to be easier when kids just had websites whether it was Tumbler or Blogger or something, you could just go to the space and see it publicly. A lot of the public spaces, you can't see them from an app, you have to be that kids' friend so understanding where your kids are is probably one of the biggest challenges."

Other presentations though out the day included Jadyn Borstmayer talking about her We Day experience, Lanigan Elementary School made a social media video presentation as well.
