Throughout October, Humboldt District Community Services is thanking employers in the area and bringing awareness to disability employment.

October is designated as Disability Employment Awareness Month, which HDCS Executive Director Juanine Korte says is a chance for them to say thanks.

"It's a way to celebrate those who have been a part of working with us and also being diverse in their hiring practices."

Korte says that this also serves as a time to showcase what they do in helping people and to continue to make Humboldt and area an inclusive region.

"It's about creating awareness in the community so that the support can be there for the people that we work with," she explained. "We are all citizens in the community and I'm sure we all have had a disability, or know someone who has a disability, and so it is about supporting and recognizing."

Success has been found with local employers who are willing to give jobs to those with disabilities, according to Korte.

"We've had lots of success with employers in the area, both in Humboldt and the surrounding communities," she noted. "We've been in the area for a long time, and feel that we have been able to really promote and work with a number of employers who have been really supportive."

Along with basic awareness, the organization is hosting a pair of events throughout the month.

On Wednesday, October 18, they are teaming up with Cottage Boutique for a fall fashion show, and then on Thursday, October 26, Mark Wafer will be in the city to speak on business inclusion.

"We're really excited that he is going to be in Humboldt for a full day," said Korte. "He owns several Tim Hortons' in Ontario, and his business success as an inclusive employer has led to a second career advising policymakers and delivering keynote speeches across the world."

Tickets for the fashion show are available at Cottage Boutique. Those wanting to register for the Wafer luncheon can call 306-682-1455 to book their spot.
