As announced last week, the federal and provincial governments will provide funding for clean and waste water infrastructure projects.

Humboldt Mayor Malcolm Eaton was in Regina on Friday for the announcement that sees Saskatchewan getting $236 million for projects.

"We can't do this alone, the costs of infrastructure are very, very significant and so we've been looking forward to Saskatchewan and Ottawa coming to this bilateral agreement. It allows the money to start to flow and projects to be submitted."

Approved projects will get 50 percent funding from the federal Liberals, the province will chip in 25 percent with the remaining dollars coming from the municipality.

Eaton is hoping to get help with the upgrading of the city's lagoon system that comes with a price tag of about $10 million.

"We need to upgrade the lagoon, that's one reason and the second reason is we need to expand our capacity in our waste water treatment plant to allow for growth, to allow for a much bigger population which we know Humboldt is heading towards in the next five to ten years."

The city has gotten assistance with the upgrades at the water treatment plant but Eaton says that was through the Building Canada Fund, they also applied for funding for the lagoon through that initiative but it was declined.
