With the summer bringing the potential of thunderstorms, Environment Canada is reminding everyone to be aware of severe conditions.

This comes in light of June 12-18 being declared lightning safety week

Terri Laing with Environment Canada says it is more than just caution during the storm itself, "studies show that one third of all deaths and injuries occur before the storm actually hits, and one third of all the deaths injuries occur after the storm is over, so what that means is people are not seeking shelter soon enough, and they're coming outside too soon."

Lightning is the top cause of weather related injuries according to Laing, "it's the summer's number one killer and injurer and that's above tornadoes."

Laing says the best advice is when the thunder roars, head indoors and seek shelter until the storm passes.
