New Democrat MLA for Saskatoon Centre David Forbes was in Humboldt Monday to take part in a rally outside Donna Hapauer's office.

Forbes says they had a number of MLA's out across Saskatchewan Monday in the light of the provincial budget.

He says the cuts to STC is just the tip of the iceberg.

"It's pretty unique in Canada because of how many people live in rural Saskatchewan," he said of the slash to the crown bus company. "The cuts to communities, the grants in lieu cut really caught the cities by surprise. The libraries are a huge one because again choices made, the tax cuts to the wealthiest it could definitely pay for the libraries."

Forbes says the corporate tax decreases are going to cost $38 million. He wasn't on a personal rampage against the current government, he admitted times are tough and tough decisions had to be made, his stance is that he wishes they were better prepared for the current market as we see it.

"What we really need to do is make sure we have a sustainable budget in place, one that recognizes the fluctuation of natural resources. When we hit $110/barrel for oil, we should have been saving that money."

Forbes is also the labour critic in Saskatchewan for the opposition, he says more is to come from the STC cuts including the 224 jobs that will be lost. He says the provincial bus line is regulated by the "Federal Canada Labour Code" and the SaskParty violated their rights.

"It requires 16 weeks notice and much more involvement with the workers. This is a time I hope they take a second look say listen, maybe we need to consult more on that. Everybody recognizes that there are costs involved but there is a value to it."

The grants in lieu formula has been retracted somewhat, although the budget did pass the vote in the legislature last week Forbes is confident alterations to the bills to finalize decisions can still be discussed in Regina.

On Friday at Humboldt's Civic Park, there will an event highlighting the downfalls of the library cuts which did hit the Wapiti board hard, Wapiti over sees the regions facilities including Humboldt's Reid-Thompson Public Library. That rally is slated for 11 o'clock.
