The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is asking for help of those who plan to go out hunting whitetail deer.

They would like hunters to submit the head of their deer for testing to find out more about Chronic Wasting Disease.

"It's at no cost and it certainly helps us out here in the province in trying to figure out where the disease is and where it isn't," said Executive Director Darrell Crabbe.

He notes that it's not just about research and finding infected areas, but that we shouldn't be consuming animals that have this disease.

"From a human health stand point, the recommendation is that we not eat the muscle meat from an infected animal," he explained. "We really want to find out more about (Chronic Wasting Disease), we want to make sure we know in Saskatchewan where it is."

He added that it has different names in different species - in sheep, it is called scrapies.

Hunters are asked to freeze their game and submit the heads for testing before consuming any meat. Any Sask Environment office will help with the process.
