They say it's the "most important meal of the day", and for good reason.

Many students at Lake Lenore School have been benefitting from the school's Breakfast for Learning (BFL) program for several years and look forward to it every Tuesday and Thursday.

Principal Ralph Viczko, says the original funding for the program came from BFL organization. As more and more schools applied for funding, Lake Lenore received fewer and fewer funds.

Viczko says the school's current breakfast program, called Full Belly/Full Mind, is made possible through the generosity of local businesses, organizations and community groups.

The school is pleased to announce that one local business recently handed over a generous cheque of $1500 which Viczko says is a "big boost to our program".

Viczko says the school was approached by Lake Lenore resident, and an agent for DuPont Pioneer, Phil Gerwing, to apply for a grant from DuPont Pioneer for the Full Belly/Full Minds program, which is in support of nutrition programs in schools.

Twice a week, every student at Lake Lenore School is offered a healthy breakfast consisting of such things as bagels, fresh fruit, smoothies, and yogurt. Occasionally, volunteers from the school committee council, such as BFL organizer, Karen Gerwing, will bring in home-baked oatmeal and muffins for the kids to start their school day off on a nutritious note.

Other fundraising events such as bake sales, open houses, a fall sale, and other donations from the community and community groups are what also help keep the program going.

"It's essential. We are small communities and small schools. If we don't have the community behind us, it certainly would make it a lot more difficult to offer those programs. It just makes it possible."
