The new year kicked off on a healthy note for many members of the Humboldt and area community on Sunday.

"Cross country skiing is reputed around the world to be probably the best overall exercise you can get, and people are starting to recognize that," says Carlton Trail Ski Club executive member and event coordinator, Brian Grest.

Club members and others who share an interest in cross-country skiing hit the trails on Sunday afternoon under sunny skies and above-average temperatures. All ages and skill levels were encouraged to participate. Grest says the club boasts active members ranging in age from 4 to 81.

The Carlton Trail Ski Club, which has been a Humboldt fixture since 1972, gathered for their first annual Flatlander Fun Ski, and the goal of blending fun and fitness was achieved.

Grest says the sport is a great way of staying active in the colder months. "In winter, we tend to be even more inactive, so this is a great opportunity to find something that's relatively easy and healthy to do in the winter time."

Grest says he has enjoyed the sport since his early days at Humboldt Public School when he was in grade 5. It was then a part of the physical education curriculum and ended up being a life-long passion for Grest.

"I have had no regrets! It's been an absolutely fantastic thing for my health and it's a great social activity."
