The rise in the price of gasoline took retailers off guard, says Dan McTeague, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.com.

Gas stations are buying their product for around $1.17 a litre and selling for just $1.19, which isn’t economical - especially when someone pays with a credit card which incurs extra fees, he said.

“For a lot of gas stations, a move of six or eight cents a litre is likely to happen.”

The recent weakness of Canadian dollar, two Edmonton refineries being at lower rates of production and increases on the spot market are all factors in the rise, he said.
