The Saskatchewan Party's falcon grip on rural communities doesn't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.

Todd Goudy won 78.5% of the vote in the Melfort constituency to become the region's new Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Goudy received 3,270 votes to 809 votes for Lorne Schroeder of the New Democrats, who had 19.4% of the vote share.

Green Party leader Shawn Setyo picked up 77 votes as the third name on the ballot.

Elections Saskatchewan says that 34% of registered voters turned out for the election - down from just over 59% in the 2016 general election.

The results will be made official on March 13 after two more ballot boxes are counted.

There were two other by-elections on Thursday, which both went to the Sask Party.

In Swift Current, former Premier Brad Wall's seat went to Everett Hindley, while in Kindersley, Ken Francis took 88% of the vote to replace Bill Boyd.
