Halloween has arrived, and for kids, one of the most exciting days of the year to be out trick or treating with friends and family.

For drivers and kids, being out on the roads and neighborhoods throughout the evening brings added safety precautions.

Here are some safety tips from Shari Hinz with Safe Communities Humboldt and Area:

For Drivers:

  • Ensure you're taking your time to pay attention to trick or treaters.
  • SLOW DOWN while driving.
  • Reduce your distractions.
  • Kids are excited when out and about and may dart onto the road.
  • Treat all residential roads as if their school zones with extra added precaution.
  • Enter and exit your driveways slowly and carefully because trick or treaters may come upon the vehicle behind or in front of you.

For Trick or Treaters:

  • Any young kids should have a responsible older child or adult accompanying them
  • Stop at the curb and look both ways
  • Don't dart out into traffic or in-between parked cars
  • Stay on the sidewalk or walking paths
  • Wear a costume with bright colors or reflective tape
  • If wearing a mask, it's recommended that they take it off when walking in between houses to improve the visibility of their surroundings.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!
