Harvest operations have begun in parts of the province, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture's Weekly Crop Report.

The report, released each Thursday, says that winter wheat is starting to be combined in the Humboldt region with four per cent of peas ready to straight cut.

Haying operations continue with 67% of the hay crop baled and 13% remaining in swath. That is slightly down from the provincial average of 79% baled. Quality is rated as 50% good and 50% poor.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated at 35% surplus and 65% adequate. Hayland and pasture topsoil moisture is 31% surplus and 69% adequate.

Any crop damage is attributed to excess moisture and wind, which has caused some lodging and disease. Rain in the past few weeks has washed out some areas and is flooding crops, resulting in significant damage in some parts.

Rain levels for the week were recorded from as low as four millimetres in Humboldt to as much as 96 millimetres in the Tisdale area.

Warm, dry weather is needed to dry out soil so it can support harvest equipment.
