October is being recognized as Disability Employment Month, an awareness campaign that strikes the cord of Humboldt and District Community Services.

Wednesday, staff from HDCS showed up to Sobeys for a work mob meaning five of them helped out at the store as a way to give back to their support of their clients and programming.

Employment Facilitator Niamh Menz says they aren't particular as to where people with disabilities work but they still want to acknowledge their contributions.

"We don't point out where individuals are working, really if it's a case of a person disclosing to their employer that they have a disability then usually, I'd say 99.9 percent of the time that employer steps up and supports that staff member without others knowing that person is struggling with a disability."

Menz spoke about the importance of businesses supporting their clients or people with disabilities and what it means for those individuals.

"I think it would be the same as what if there wasn't a Dave Doepker(Sobeys owner) in my life and would give me a part time of full time job? It's the same for our clients to, everybody wants that social-economic security, we want purpose in our lives and we want to work. It would be the same thing."

On top of celebrating the month which HDCS has done for three years with activities like the mob, they also want to knock down some barriers with employers.

"Part of our job right now is debunking those myths," Menz proclaimed. "Is it going to raise my insurance? I there more sick days? Different things like that, we just want employers to talk to other employers, ask them from a business stand point is this good for you? How has it been successful? How has it changed the shape of your business?"

Supported employment helps people with disabilities or barriers to help find and maintain meaningful community based employment.
