Emergency services were able to save one man, but another has died in an early Sunday morning crash on Highway 5.

The collision took place around 3:30am, with a car being submerged in a nearby slough, and the semi being overturned in the ditch.

Fire and water rescue crews were able to assist the man whose car had gone under water and take him to safety. He and a passenger in the semi were taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The driver of the semi, however, has died.

Highway 5 was closed or restricted to one lane for nearly 12 hours throughout the day, as an investigation and clean up took place. The semi had multiple pallets of product spill into the ditch, requiring extra time to clean the area.

The highway reopened in full just before 2:30pm.

The collision occurred about 10 kilometres east of the city, near the Highway 41 turn off.
