The provincial graduation rate in Saskatchewan is the highest it has been in 20 years, which is 76.5%.

The Horizon School Division graduation rate is at 84%.

Director of Education Kevin Garinger tells us one of the ways they have been able to improve the rate.

"They had a symposium where a team of Horizon staff, including myself, went to the symposium and worked with others across the entire sector around some things that are happening in certain places that are leading towards success. Things like land-based education and those kinds of things that work for various populations within school divisions."

He tells us more about how the growth for graduation rates are important.

"Growth is really critical for our system. Even though right now our three-year graduation rate is at 84 and the province is a little under 77, that's a fairly significant shift. But at the same time, I'm looking at how did we do last year? How did we do the year before? Are we doing the things that we need to do to see that growth?"

He adds that if things aren't moving in the way they need them too, adjustments are necessary.

Garinger explains more on the improved rates.

"Our goal is to have every child graduate. So we've got work to do and we will continue to do that important work. But certainly, the improvements are saying that we're doing some things, it's not a fluke or anything like that, we're actually making some significant changes for our children that are leading to improved results. We've certainly recognized that we have lots of work to do."

Horizon School Division is constantly looking for ways to improve graduation rates.
