With the school year becoming closer and closer, the Horizon School Division decided to celebrate the new year coming up.

The third annual celebration day was held at the Humboldt Curling Rink, and included presentations from students and Wall of Fame inductees.

Kevin Garinger is the Director of Education for the Horizon School Division.

He talks about the importance of the Celebration Day.

"It's a fantastic day. It's an opportunity to bring together our staff from Horizon School Division from across the entire system. We're obviously a large school system, we bring together every staff member here today just to recognize them and say thank you fro the work we know they are going to do with our students."

Part of the day was welcoming teachers back, but also included was the induction of four wall of fame inductees.

Garinger describes the message the inductees had to share.

"The impact that adults, teachers, other support staff that they have on these people is what is so incredible. They talked a lot about mentors, people in their lives, teachers those types of people, that made a difference and challenged them to go great lengths and to do amazing things. The four people we are recognizing again this year, are just incredible people."

Betty-Ann Heggie, David Thauberger, Dr. Glen Baker, and Dr. James A. Dosman were all honoured by HSD for their accomplishments post-school.

Students also had time on the stage, as students from all across the Horizon School Division were able to perform for the teachers.

Garinger talks about some of the performances by the students at the Celebration Day.

"Of course this year was recognized by the Province, by our Premier, as the year of the Saskatchewan Ukrainian. So we had children from the Wadena Ukrainian dance group that were here. These are children, Horizon students who came and performed in front of us. Then we had children from Lanigan who did a First Nation Cultural dance, which was absolutely incredible."

Garinger says having students part of the celebration day is just as important as having teachers there.

"What we are doing, in recognizing the work that these 1,000 (teachers and staff members) are going to do in the next few days, that it really comes down to impacting our children. It's so exciting to have them part of the process."

The school year starts on Thursday, September 1st.
