For years, students around Humboldt living on farms have been picked up by busses as transportation to school.

Students living within the City of Humboldt have now been given that opportunity as well.

Director of Education Kevin Garinger tells us why they decided to start in-city bussing.

"There's obviously safety matters that we need consider, and through the processes of engaging our parents, we identified that they certainly were a need on ensuring that in-city bussing existed for students in Humboldt."

He tells us of some of the benefits of in-city bussing as well.

"It's an opportunity to have a bus ride to their school, not to have to worry about whether or not our students are walking across rail tracks and those kinds of things, but rather trying to ensure the safety concern is addressed."

He adds that it also helps with the distance that some students have to travel within the city.

Garinger says that they are currently around 160 students registered for the program and that the reaction has been quite positive so far.

"There's been lots of communication back and forth indicating the appreciation of parents for this bussing opportunity for their children. I know that our students are also benefiting from it and certainly are very appreciative of the fact that horizon School Division has moved forward with this change."
