March 21st is marked as the International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

To celebrate, the Humboldt Regional Newcomer Centre held a basketball tournament at the Humboldt Collegiate Institute on Saturday, March 16th. Even though the tournament was scheduled five days before designated day, the message of eliminating racial discrimination was broadcast throughout the tournament.

"We feel that racism still prevails and as a newcomers centre we want people not just to tolerate and accept each other, but also to understand our differences and celebrate those differences together," said Janine Hart, Executive Director of the Humboldt Regional Newcomers Centre.

This is the 4th year in a row the Newcomer Centre has celebrated International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Each year is a different type of celebration with this year's being a basketball tournament, a concession, and halftime entertainment.

Each person signed up individually and entrants were split into five even teams with basketball running throughout the entire day. Plans for next year have not been made yet, but something will be in works.
