The City of Humboldt is poised to adopt a new way of running committee meetings.

The move would see the existing four three-person committees - Works and Utilities, Corporate Services, Communications and Community Development, and Community and Leisure Services - replaced by a single executive committee consisting of the whole of council. The new committee would meet once a month.

While the four committees have good discussions, each of them consists of less than half of council, City Manager Joe Day said. In a report to council he also said administration members don't benefit from discussion at meetings outside their departments, and reports presented to committees are often overly detailed and discuss operational issues rather than governance.

"This is just good for us to get all of council involved in the issues that come forward to the committee structure," he said.

Mayor Rob Muench said at Monday's council meeting that given quorum at current committees is two people, those two people alone can end up making recommendations to the whole of council.

Council passed a recommendation at Monday's meeting to move to the new structure effective February 2018.
