It’s been a tough week of weather for farmers across the province.

“We’ve had some very high temperatures, we’ve had some hail, we’ve had strong winds and heavy downpours, some tornadoes,” crop extension specialist Shannon Friesen said.

Crop conditions vary widely based on soil moisture levels, but despite damage from weather most are in fair to excellent condition, she said.

The Humboldt area has seen some rain but it will continue to need more, especially as cereal crops and canola pods head out, she said.

“Now that we’ve had some very high temperatures, some wind, a lot of topsoil moisture really has depleted. We do still have some reserves deep down but we are very much dependant on rainfall right now in order to get some of those heads filled.”

Crops would stay in good condition without rain but the yield may suffer, she said.
