Ken Campbell had been waiting to pick up his clubs since the Humboldt golf course closed last October.

So, just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, he and Dave Gilbault were the first people to play a round on the first day of this season.

“It’s just great to hang out with the guys and have some fun,” Campbell said.

“The course is dry, it’s in good shape for this time of year. Probably the best we’ve seen for years.”

The late winter means they’re about a week behind in opening, but that’s true for most courses too, general manager Chad Keens said.

The snow melted quickly, and grounds staff did a great job getting the course ready, he said.

“It is in great shape already, even though it’s spring.”
