The City of Humboldt has hired a consulting firm to find a long time solution to the odours elevating form the city's lagoon.

Manager Roy Hardy said the warm Winter has helped increase the pungency of the ponds south east of the city.

"It was a matter of timing more than anything else. We don't expect it to last any longer than it has in other years. It is a factor that we are going to face every Spring as long as we continue to have a lagoon system in place in the city."

A couple years ago the city drained pond number one and took out the sludge but evidently more work needs to be done. Hardy explains what they intend to do to.

"It's something that is a product of having an open lagoon like we have. It's something that they(council) want to see us try and alleviate through some type of enhancement to the system including better aeration, those types of things which our consultant is going to look at."

The smell occurs when the ice melts and the warmer water moves to the top and the colder water moves to lower levels.

Hardy says they should have a report back from the engineers within a couple months.
