Humboldt Mayor Malcolm Eaton has concluded his time on the board of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

The organization recently had their annual convention in Winnipeg which this year featured an address from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Eaton said the Prime Minister spent a lot of time selling their infrastructure plan for the next decade.

"It's a new ear and a new time. We're seeing, over the next 10 years unprecedented amounts of funds being committed to much needed infrastructure right across the country."

The City of Humboldt is in the process of finding a solution to the much maligned intersection of Fifth Avenue and Main Street by the post office.

Coincidentally Mayor Eaton has just returned from the FCM convention where he met with some senior CN officials.

"This requires some negotiations and some long term planning," Eaton explains. "So it's always been very helpful to go. CN always has a major presence at these FCM events and so it's a great opportunity to speak directly with them about the issues and the opportunities we have in our city."

Eaton says he learned a lot during his three years being involved including what to take from other centres growing with help from large mining projects.

"It just was a very interesting sharing of our experiences and lessons learned and things to do and things not to do. So I certainly enjoyed that, that was a new experience and it may lead to an ongoing partnership with the City of Humboldt with that international project."

Eaton believes he has put Humboldt on the federal map during his three years being involved with FCM.

"I think Humboldt has a story to tell about the growth and development in our region here. I think we have a story to tell about how we're an important part of this province as one of the economic hot spots and I think we have wanted to have a voice on some of the National issues, most importantly infrastructure."

Another highlight for Eaton was a discussion with leaders of other communities in Peru and Columbia that have large mining projects nearby so they bounced ideas off each other as to what they have done right and wrong planning for growth.
