The Community Initiatives Fund has given the Saskatchewan Pride Network a $50,000 grant.

The Sask. Pride Network, an organization that helps members of the L-G-B-T community avoid harassment as well as providing awareness, stopped in Humboldt Saturday night to help spread awareness to their cause.

Joe Wickenhauser, the Executive Director of Moose Jaw Pride, explains what the grant money will be going towards.

"Basically what we are doing is organizing community events around Saskatchewan and looking to bring smaller communities in Saskatchewan some awareness and understanding about diversity. Also to start creating safe spaces and provide activities for different community members to participate in."

Wickenhauser explains why this grant will be important.

"There's been some efforts to have gender and sexual diversity events in Humboldt and we saw that there's been that kind of desire for that. We wanted to work with the Humboldt community and say hey, we want to help you with some resources and some organizational structure and help make this a reality."

He talks about what this will do for the kids in Horizon School Division as well.

"Our youth are particularity vulnerable to acts of discrimination and so I think when our teachers, our principals and our school counselors have an understanding of gender and sexual diversity it makes it a lot easier for youth to be themselves and not experience as profoundly the negative effects of bullying and harassment and discrimination."

The City of Humboldt proclaimed gender diversity and awareness week during the last week March.
