A local student recently had a one-of-a-kind experience to attend a job shadow on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Brody Hinz, a Grade 12 student at Humboldt Collegiate Institute, was one of around 100 students selected for the opportunity.

He heard about the chance to take the trip through Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"I filled out this form and answered a question, which was - if I had five minutes to talk to the Prime Minister, what would I ask him?" Hinz explained. "I can't remember what I put down, but the answer must have been good enough because I was told I was one of the very few students who won this trip to Ottawa."

Hinz left for Ottawa on November 5 and had his day of job shadowing on November 7.

He says that it was a great experience.

"I was matched up with Kelly Block, the local Member of Parliament for this area. Unfortunately, she didn't fly in until about an hour before Question Period, so I spent the day with her representatives," he said. "They took me through what a normal day looks like for a politician, what a politician does, and we went through all the government buildings and got a tour of Parliament Hill."

Hinz noted that the most enjoyable part of the day was sitting in on Question Period.

"That was probably my favourite part of the entire trip. It was so funny watching both sides go back and forth at each other."

When asked if he would attend the trip again, or recommend it to others, Hinz said: "in a heartbeat".
