The bus accident on Friday, April 6th that claimed the lives of 15 members with the Humboldt Broncos and sent 14 others to hospital with injuries has shaken the community, the province, the nation and the world.

But through the dark times and grief, people can look to one of the players who survived the tragedy for inspiration.

Ryan Straschnitzki has underwent a successful 7-hour surgery on his broken back at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, but is paralyzed from the chest down and doctors say he will likely never walk again.

But the Broncos' defenceman says he will not let this new reality stop him from continuing to chase his hockey dream.

“He keeps wanting to try and move his legs, of course, because he wants to go back skating,” Ryan's father, Tom, told the Calgary Herald. “He just looked at me and his mother and Ryan goes, ‘Well, I’m gonna get onto the Olympic sledge hockey team.’

“He’s an amazing kid, that boy.”

Straschnitski, 18-years-old from Airdrie, Alberta, was in his first year with the Humboldt Broncos.
