With the warm weather and more people on the highways, SGI has announced their traffic spotlight for May.

Throughout the month, police will be putting an extra eye towards drunk drivers.

The insurance company will also be promoting the issue through other modes, according to Spokesperson Kelley Brinkworth.

"We're going to be very active on social media, promoting impaired driving prevention and giving tips to people on options they have to get home safe," Brinkworth noted.

Despite continuously bringing awareness to the front, she adds that it is still causes the most deaths in collisions.

"It is the number one contributing factor in fatal crashes here in Saskatchewan. In 2014, 61 people were killed in impaired driving crashes and 541 other people were injured."

She noted that preventing drunk driving is quite simple.

"Think about everybody else that's on the road. They want to get home safely to their loved ones too," Brinkworth said. "Whether you are going to get a designated driver, or call a cab, or your brother or sister, even stay at a friends house. Just don't get behind the wheel if you've been driving or using drugs."

SGI issues a monthly spotlight based on the time of year, and to promote different vehicle safety aspects.
