Many different celebrations take place for Canada Day, but in the Humboldt area, one of the most popular places to be is Jansen.

"We try to make it a family day, so there is lots of free activities. There's ball and slo-pitch on. We have kids rides, bouncy rides, some old-fashioned horse and a car ride that we have had for many years. We've put this on now for 25-plus years," said Bruce Elke, one of the organizers of the day.

Elke added that there will also be live entertainment throughout the day, in addition to a wide range of activities.

  • Concession is open 11am to 7pm
  • Car Show - 10am to 4pm
  • Free Bowling/Pool - 1pm to 3pm
  • Kids Rides - 1pm to 10pm; Canada Rally - 4pm
  • Beer Gardens - 2pm to 2am
  • Face Painting - 3pm to 8pm
  • Slo-pitch, drone presentations, foosball and more throughout the day.

Officially dubbed Jansen 'Lites up the Nite', Elke says it started with the work of four people, and has grown to include a full planning group.

"It started from two couples putting it on and our Kinsmen club took over and there is a Canada Day committee," he noted. "Anywhere from 600 to 1200 people come out to see the fireworks in the evening and, I guess we're kind of in the position now where people expect it. We like to put on a show."

Elke says that each year always leaves them beaming from the amount of people who come, and from the distances they travel.

"You really kind of wonder sometimes and marvel at it. People come from 40 to 60 miles away and then people come home for the weekend," he explained. "The big thing is you get up close and personal to the fireworks and get to see some people too."

Fireworks, as usual, will be a highlight, and will begin to launch at dusk.
