With spring arriving and the weather consistently tucked in at or above the zero degree mark, melting snow could create some unwanted conditions in and around your home.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance is out with some tips to help avoid having to claim any water damage.

  • Rake remaining snow off your roof
  • Check eavestroughs and gutters for signs of ice dams and remove debris that could slow water flow
  • Shovel snow away from the foundation of your home
  • Check the grading in the yard to ensure it is sloping away from the foundation
  • Extend downspouts away from your home by atleast two metres
  • Check your sump pump to ensure it is ready for melt water
  • Check your basement regularly for signs of water.

SGI says that an average water damage claim can be around $23,000, so taking the steps to prevent it from happening is ideal.

"A little time spent now could save you a big headache as the weather warms up. This much snow so late in the season could result in a very fast melt," says SGI's Tyler McMurchy.
