Kids had a fun day of reading and writing events for Literacy Blast 2019 at Humboldt Collegiate Institute.

Students from all three of Humboldt's elementary school's in grades one, two, three, and four joined up at HCI to take part in the Literacy Blast.

There were different stations set up for the day that the groups travelled to.

David Millette, Vice Principal, talked about what the different stations included.

"The stations included, book reading where they read with their buddies, another station is where they created some bookmarks, third was a writing station where they got to create a book and illustrate it, and finally was a station where they were read to."

The day had dancing, a tug a war, prizes, and snacks.

Students from grades 3 and 4 attended in the morning with the grade 11 and 12 students leading and in the afternoon the grade 1 and 2 students paired with the 9's and 10's leading.

This was the first year that the school put on this event and Millette talked about the feelings surrounding the event.

"So we weren't sure, with something new, we weren't sure how it was going to go, but we were confident that our students here in Humboldt from kindergarten to grade 12 are amazing individuals and that they would take such an opportunity and make it a special day."

During the final station, there were special readers including the Principal Mr. Popoff as well as Humboldt Broncos Head Coach Scott Barney.

The day had multi-purpose and Millette spoke about some of the reasons.

"Building up literacy in all of our students. I think in Humboldt we realize very quickly as educators that all of these students whether from kindergarten to grade 12 are all of our students and we see them at one point or another. We wanted to ensure that this was something we value here in Humboldt and understand that literacy is a key component that expands our abilities to learn."
