It was a bittersweet night for Tom Lukiwski. The long-time Conservative MP, who formerly served the Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre riding, won the newly created seat of Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan in Monday's federal election.

However, he still felt the sting of the Liberal's majority election victory, rendering Lukiwski and his cohorts to the Opposition side of the House in Parliament.

Lukiwski felt the party deserved a better fate.

"I felt that as a government we had provided Canadians with an excellent nine year track record, we had lowered taxes consistently, we had balanced the budget but there's no saying in politics, the public and the voters are never wrong, they wanted change and that's exactly what they got."

Lukiwski has been an MP since 2004, and represented the old Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre riding, before the electoral boundaries changed leading up to Election 42.

Mixed emotions overcame him when the results were determined, "I'm very happy, very exhilarated, very ratified, very humbled by being elected by such an overwhelming margin here in Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan but very disappointed by the results nationally."

Lukiwski took over 55 per cent of the vote, with Dustan Hlady of the NDP finishing 2nd with 24 per cent.

Hlady spoke about how his party performed nationally and explained that he was surprised how they had performed.

"It surprised me a lot, I thought we'd either win or be official opposition again we were only 35 seats away from taking government as the official opposition so yeah it really shocked me and I think it's disheartening for a lot of NDP people out there but as New Democrats we have bounced back from worse and I know we will see and NDP government in my lifetime."

Hlady now plans to find any way to serve his community going forward.

"I always said that if I win I'll serve my constituents to the best of my ability, I will work for them day in and day out and if I lose I will find another way to serve the community because to me this is just an opportunity to serve the community in one way and there are other ways to do that as well."

He added that he plans to run in the next election.
